About the event
A truly unique adventure. Join us on a night-time canoe paddle on Coniston Water in the heart of the Lake District. Away from any light pollution, you can enjoy the beauty and vastness of one of the darkest skies in England.
You will start the guided canoe tour just before sunset, giving you time to get to grips with paddling the canoe whilst it is still light. We will journey along Coniston Water and watch as the sun sets over the mountains.
Along the journey, we will stop to gaze up at the night sky, identify some of the constellations and show you how to navigate using the stars! We'll also share our knowledge of the legends and mythology that surround the constellations. Enjoy a Hot Chocolate and toast some Marshmallows and then we'll paddle back to shore using only the soft light of our glow sticks to guide us home.
Cumbria is listed in the top 5% of the darkest areas in the whole of Britain. On a clear night, we are lucky enough to be able to see thousands of stars, constellations and the Milky Way just with the naked eye, making Coniston one of the best venues in England for star gazing.
