A great mountain bike route for an afternoon or evening. This fabulous but little used route has it all. Some great single track downhills, views and a few slightly more technical sections. Route goes anticlockwise to get the best downhill.
Park just down the road from birch bank farm. Continue up the bridleway past birch bank to Tottlebank house and on towards Houlker Hall. Just before the house you'll see a track heading up the hill on your left. Continue along past Appletree Holme through a gate until you reach a junction. Turn left and follow the wall until the track stretches away in front of you and leaves the wall. You'll ride past a signpost for the cumbrian way. From here continue left along the single track. Continue on the single track which is a mix of undulating track and downhill sections. There is an obvious fork in the track - keep left. The next section has some great downhill plus amazing views of the Coniston mountains if you can look up for long enough to enjoy it! The track forks again. Stay left under the tree and continue on for the steepest section of the downhill. Rolling single track with a few technical sections which can be a bit slippery under wheel when wet! The track now turns into a grassy drive and finally reaches the road. Head up the quad burning uphill back to the car or extend the ride along towards Low Heathwaite Gate along a grassy brideway. The track can be biked even when everything is wet and boggy as alot of it stays well drained.
