Can anyone do this?

Anyone from age 10 upwards.  Netherbeck is quite a physical ghyll scramble so you will need good level of fitness can participate in this activity. You must be able to fit into a climbing harness as there is a compulsory 12m climb out of the ghyll.

Weight Limit: 120Kg /19 St

There is no upper age limit. You will be scrambling up and down small rock steps for approximately 3 hours, alongside jumping into plunge pools, if you so choose. Anyone of good fitness can do this and most of our clients have never done a Ghyll Scramble before!

How old do I have to be?

This ghyll can be quite challenging in higher water levels especially in the main canyon section therefore age 10  is the youngest for the full through trip and there is no upper age limit - a good level of fitness is required. We tailor the activity to each individual session. Where possible, we try and arrange groups so that families are with others of similar ages and adult groups are together.

We also offer a slightly shorter return trip in a lower section of the ghyll which is perfect for little legs and is a brilliant ghyll scrambling adventure for younger children. This is suitable for children age 5 upwards.

How long is the activity?

It is approximately 3.5 hours from when we meet you to when we say goodbye.

What do I bring?

• A pair of sturdy trainers or walking boots to go into the ghyll with. These need to be able to lace up tight so that they stay on in the moving water. Please note crocs, lightweight water shoes or sandals are not appropriate.
 • Swimming costume or shorts for under the wetsuit.
 • ESSENTIAL -  Lightweight Jogging bottoms or leggings (not shorts) to go over the wetsuit (to protect the legs of the suit). We have spares if you need them.
 • Snacks and drink for afterwards.
 • Towel. 
 • Medication.

Question 5

Where do I get changed?

Accepted Answer

You will change in the car park or in your vehicle. We provide a sheet you can stand on if you wish to change next to your vehicle. Please bring along a towel for modesty - you might find it helpful to change into your swimwear before you arrive to meet us.

Are there any toilets or showers?

The nearest toilet is at Brackenclose car park which is about a 10 minute drive further up the valley towards Wasdale Head from where you meet us . There are no showers nearby.

Question 7

Can non-participants spectate at this venue?

Accepted Answer

Only for the first 10 minutes. There is a path that runs alongside and follows the first section of the ghyll. Shortly after this, the path ends and the ghyll disappears into the canyon which is not accessible or visible from above for spectators.

There is a path that runs along the valley a distance from the canyon if non participants wish to go for a walk. There is also a pub 15 minutes drive from the Ghyll if spectators want refreshments whilst they wait. (Wasdale Head Inn)

How far is the walk from the car park to the activity?

It is a 1 minute walk from the meeting point in the car layby to the start of the Ghyll Scramble.

Question 9

Can I bring my dog?

Accepted Answer

Sorry, this activity is not suitable for dogs. We do have other activities that you can bring your dog such as Canoeing, Rock Climbing, Bushcraft and Hill Walking. There is however, a footpath which runs up the valley close by, where you can walk dogs if you have a spectator in your party. Please note you can only spectate a very small section of this ghyll.
